Collision in the Kattegat
On May 6, 2019, at 3.30 a.m. the "Moonlight ND-58" (IMO: 8944434), was in collision with the Cyprus flagged tug "Mustang" (IMO: 9555383), which had sailed from Gdynia to Frederikshavn on April 30, in the Kattegat NW of Grenen. The shrimp trawler from Rødvig with a crew of five on board was hit at the port side, and in a few minutes it was in imminent danger of sinking. The tug with a grain loaded vessel in tow was coming from a south-westerly direction and slammed into the trawler with 4 knots. After some minutes the trawler got rid of the tugboat and out of the danger zone. She had suffered a hole in the hull and the railing amidship and the wheelhouse were also so heavily damaged. The JRCC was alerted and sent two rescue vessels as well as a helicopter ready for quick action if needed. Lyngby Radio alerted the surrounding shipping. The Skagen Rescue Station sent the small fast-moving "FRB 8" with pumping equipment, and the lifeboat "Lars Kruse" followed quickly. Rescue men were sent aboard the "Moonlight" with pumps, and they quickly got the situation under control. The damage was above the waterline, so after half an hour's work, the pumps could be stopped as the imminent danger of sinking was eliminated. The vessel headed to Skagen with own power, escorted by both lifeboats from the Skagen Rescue Station. After it safely moored in port it was waiting for the insurance company to assess the damage . The case has also been passed on to the Maritime Assistance Service (MAS) and the Danish Maritime Authority for the further investigations into the collision. The ship was then to be repaired at Karstensens Shipyard. The "Mustang" continued on its way to Frederikshavn. Repairs at the shipyard in Skagen were completed on Oct 30. The 'Moonlight' left the port at 6.50 p.m. and headed to Hirtshals, where it arrived on Nov 1 and berthed in the East Basin at 10.40 p.m. Danish reports with photos: https://fiskerforum.dk/dramatisk-paasejling-af-fiskefartoej-nord-for-skagen-i-nat/ http://nyheder.tv2.dk/lokalt/2019-05-06-mayday-i-nat-kutter-og-slaebebaad-stoedt-sammen-nord-for-skagen https://www.tv2nord.dk/artikel/fiskekutter-sejlet-ned-af-slaebebaad-nord-skagen
