Medevac in Straits of Mackinack

Fri Oct 03 22:01:56 CEST 2014 Timsen

The US Coast Guard conducted a medical evacuation of a 36-year-old man from the "Mesabi Miner" in the Straits of Mackinac in the evening of Oct 2, 2014. Just before 6 p.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, received a report of a crew member who was experiencing shortness of breath, pain in his left arm and tightness in his chest aboard the vessel en route to Indiana Harbor, Indiana. Another crew member aboard the vessel, with medical training, was monitoring the man and reported him as conscious and ambulatory. Sector Sault Ste. Marie watchstanders directed the launch of a boat crew from Coast Guard Station St. Ignace, Michigan, aboard a 45-foot response boat, and conducted a conference call with a duty flight surgeon, who recommended a medical evacuation. The "Mesabi Miner" changed its course in order to meet the Station St. Ignace rescue crew closer to St. Ignace. About 10 minutes later, the rescue crew arrived on scene, brought the man aboard their boat and transported him back to St. Ignace where they were met by emergency medical services personnel who stabilized the man and took him via ambulance to McLaren Northern Hospital in Petoskey, Michigan.

Mon Jan 06 21:54:50 CET 2014 Timsen

The "Hollyhock" arrived in St. Ignace, Michigan, in the evening of Jan 5. She moored up at about 8:30 p.m. and was undergoing a complete damage assessment. The crew of the "Mesabi Miner", en route to Gary, Ind., reported a 12-inch crack in the bow about 4 feet above the waterline and said the bow is pushed in about 8 to 12 inches. No pollution or injuries have been reported concerning the incident and neither vessel has reported any flooding. The "Mesabi Miner" was to unload its cargo in Gary, Indiana, and then the damage and planned repairs will be assessed. - See more at: http://www.uscgnews.com/go/doc/4007/2062526/-CORRECTION-Coast-Guard-Cutter-Hollyhock-involved-in-collision-with-motor-vessel-in-Lake-Michigan#sthash.LmtNCppy.dpuf
