The "Mersin D" tilted 20 degrees to port on Feb 13 in rough wea conditions. The rocky bottom had caused water ingress in the hull. The plan to lighter the cargo for a salvage had to be abandoned due to the bad weather. On Feb 14 at 4.30 p.m. the ship already had a list of 45 degrees and was regarded as a wreck.

on Feb 9 at 3.30 p.m. the "Mersin D" ran aground at Bandırma Mola Bankında after having departed from Bandirma bound for the Ukrainian port Kherson with a cargo of 949 tons wheat. The rescue boat "Kiyi Emniyeti 8" proceeded to the grounding site eight miles off Bandirma. The crew of 10 was safe.
