Fourth Russian tanker in distress
The 'Mercury' with a crew of 19 people, en route to Vladivostok, lost its propulsion in the Pacific Ocean due to the main engine failure on the evening of Dec 17, 2024. The ship was adrift about 50 km northeast of Simushir Island, which is part of the middle group of the Greater Kuril Islands. The tanker sent a distress signal to the marine rescue sub-center in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. On the night of Dec 18, the emergency tug 'Rubin' of the marine rescue service left the port of Korsakov and headed to the vessel to tow it to the port. The owner of the Mercury is the NIKO Group,
