Grounded dredger causes beach erosion

After the grounding of the "Hansita" off Mundakkal the shore suffered strong erosion. Even the newly laid coastal road from Kollam to Paravur was threatened as well as five houses near the site. People of the area grouped up on July 7 in the evening and blocked the coastal road in protest against the alleged apathy on the part of the authorities to clear the vessel from there. Last month the authorities had given as assurance to tow the dredger away from the beach. But nothing had been done so far. N.K. Premachandran, MP, who visited the site of on July 7,called for immediate steps to clear the dredger from the beach. The "Hansita"m caught in a legal wrangle had been lying anchored three nautical miles off the Kollam coast since November 2013.
