Ferry left Gibraltar after ten months
After ten months moored in the port of Gibraltar, the “Med Star”, once owned by the Moroccan company Intershipping, set sail on May 9, 2024, towed by the tug “Christos XXXIV”, headed to Piraeus. The registration port was erased, and the ship did not have a flag. During the departure maneuver the ferry was assisted by the tugs “Rooke” and “Eliott”. Since January 2023 it was moored in the port of Algeciras, frequently detained due to excessive smoke problems and suffering from the financial problems of its owner. More complaints about emissions of outdated ferry
The 'Med Star' was denounced again for contamination in the Bay of Algeciras with its high emission levels. Environmentalists urged the shipping company to withdraw a ship they consider outdated. Agaden Ecologistas en Acción has transferred the complaints of the residents of Algeciras of the Virgen del Carmen avenue to the recurrence of contaminatio of the ship that covers the route between the ports of Algeciras and Tangier-Med. A few days after the announcement that the 'Med Star' was removed from service for the repair of its engines and combustion adjustments, the ferry has returned to the waters of the Bay with emission levels that for Agaden violate the permitted levels. The ship returned on May 18, at 5:45 p.m. casting a large black smoke plume seen from many points in the city.
