Disabled tug received assistance off Karachi

Wed Feb 07 11:11:20 CET 2024 Timsen

The Pakistan Navy?s Joint Maritime Information and Coordination Centre (JMICC) received a distress signal from the 'SAS 5', en route from the port of Debhol to Sharjah, on Feb 4, 2024. The vessel had sailed from Debhol on Feb 1, had been disabled for the last few days near the Indian coast after a failure of its electric generators 167 nautical miles southeast of the port of Karachi. The Pakistan Navy, together with the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA), reached the nine Indian crew members on Feb 5. Initially, a PN Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft was tasked to locate the vessel at sea followed by an SAR operation by the Pakistan Maritime Security Ship PMSS 'Kashmir', which was deployed on routine Maritime Security Operations in the area. Upon reaching the distressed vessel, the tug was secured alongside, and after three hours of repair efforts the defect was rectified. Apart from technical assistance, medical facilities, fresh water and meals were also provided to the fatigued crew and the vessel successfully resumed its voyage towards Sharjah.
