NGO ship rescued 41 migrants and assisted 42 more

On Aug 10 the NGO ship "Louise Michel" disembarked 28 migrants in Trapani, who were rescued after 10 days adrift in the sea. The NGO ship was notified by a Frontex plane, and upon its arrival at the scene there were eight people in the water and a very crowded metal boat with 20 people on boarrd. All were safely pulled aboard the 'Louise Michel' and received medical attention, food and water. Meanwhile the 'Mare Go', which rescued 41 migrants in danger, who were transferred by the coast guard to Lampedusa, has been waiting for hours for the arrival of a patrol boat to transfer another 42 migrants, eight of whom were traveling in a boat with a damaged engine and another 36 in an iron boat.

NGO ship rescued 38 migrants

During the weekend of July 15-16, 2023, the "Mare GO" assisted six troubled boats with migrants in the Mediterranean Sea with on thw whole 200 migrants on board. 38 of them were taken on board the NGO ship.

Detention order illegal

The Federal Ministry of Transport is no longer allowed to arrest the two ships 'Mare Liberum' and 'Sebastian K' belonging to the Mare Liberum refugee aid organization. According to a decision by the Hamburg Administrative Court on Oct 1, 2020, the detention orders are illegal. The court thus granted an urgent motion by the Berlin association Mare Liberum, which observes the human rights situation for migrants on the Turkish-Greek sea border. The Ministry of Transport prevented the “Mare Liberum” and “Sebastian K” from leaving port in mid-August, justifying this by saying that the vessels did not have the necessary ship safety certificates. It referred to a change in the Ship Safety Ordinance that has been in force since spring. According to the explanatory memorandum, the change was made in particular to enforce stricter safety rules for smaller ships that are used for "private sea rescue, environmental protection and other humanitarian purposes".
