High voltage pylon stabilized, ship freed
The Grid operator TenneT worked all day on Aug 26 to finally stabilize the high-voltage pylon in Franeker, and late in the evening it was reported to be safe and stable. On Aug 27, an inspection was to be conducted to determine the extent of the damage. Based on this inspection, the grid operator would make an assessment how to resolve this and how long it will take, hoping to be able to say something about that in the coming days. The barge 'Famke' (MMSI: 244630496) was also sailing again on the evening of Aug 26. The ship had been unloading sand in Leeuwarden when the power went out. The crane's clamp was in the hold at the time, so that the ship got stuck for two days. The 'Famke' returned to Harlingen, being one of the first vessels to pass under the power lines near Franeker on the evening of Aug 26. It berthed in Harlingen on Aug 27. Police launched investigation, crane arrived on site
Police have launched an investigation into the allision with power lines in Franeker. Two skippers have been identified as suspects. The police examined, among other things, the vessel's technical condition, and also looked at the permits. Witnesses and the skippers themselves were also being interviewed. It was still unknown whether a criminal offense has been committed. The on-site investigation cannot yet be fully completed because the surrounding area had not been cleared. The municipality of Waadhoeke has issued a restricted area ban for the area around the damaged power lines in Franeker. The ban is in effect until the high-voltage pylons have been stabilized and the area has been declared safe again. The restricted area ban did not apply to employees of emergency services, utilities, and support services, people involved in the repair work, or business owners with explicit permission from the municipality. Getting a 400-ton crane on site took longer than initially anticipated. Currently, the last of the track plates were being laid to position the crane. Once this has been done, the crane can be hooked up to the pylon for stabilization at 7:00 p.m. Then the danger of the high-voltage pylon toppling will have passed. TenneT expected the area to be reopened later this evening of Aug 26.
Crane barge allided with high voltage power line
On Aug 25, 2025, at 2.30 p.m. a major power outage occurred in Leeuwarden and the surrounding area after a crane on a barge of Jongema Transport, pushed by the 'Maranatha', allided with a high-voltage power line near Herbaijum. The barge that caused the damage was not connected to TenneT. It was moored in pos. 53° 11' N 005° 31' E. One power line was completely severed and a second was severely damaged. As a result, the entire connection between Herbaijum and Lauwersmeer was down, and the Schenkenschans high-voltage substation was de-energized. The damage has left an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 households and businesses without electricity. Several emergency vehicles attended on site. The power outage triggered a chain reaction of incidents. Several people became trapped in elevators and had to be rescued by the fire department. Firefighters were deployed on Oosterkade, Fonteinland, Reinder Buysingweg, and Stadionplein, among other locations. The Menaam fire brigade had to be deployed to Leeuwarden to assist the already occupied Leeuwarden firefighters. Bridges could no longer be closed due to the outage, causing traffic congestion. Ultimately, the province decided to keep all remaining bridges closed for the duration of the outage. The railway bridge over the Van Harinxmakanaal could no longer be fully closed, resulting in a prolonged train service. Passengers were transported by buses and taxis to Grou-Jirnsum and Akkrum. A technician manually closed the bridge. Train service resumed around 6 p.m. Many shops were forced to close, including all shops at Stadionplein. The municipality canceled all appointments, and the NHL University of Applied Sciences was forced to close. Many companies sent their employees home. In parts of Leeuwarden, the mobile network has been down. As a result, people have no internet connection on their phones. TenneT disconnected and grounded the entire connection to reroute the power, which was expected to be completed between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. The 110 kV Schenkenschans substation has been working again since 8:30 p.m., and around 8:45 p.m.., all customers were successfully reconnected by Liander, meaning everyone had power again. Liander could then gradually reconnect all connections to the power grid. TenneT reported on its website that it would take until approximately between 11:00 p.m. and midnight before the connection is secured and rerouted. Liander could then begin gradually reconnecting its customers. Currently, approximately 25,000 connections are still without power. A temporary solution has been found for the outage, which has restored power to the affected areas. However, the high-voltage connection from Franeker has not yet been restored. As a precaution, the area around the high-voltage pylons near the Van Harinxmakanaal canal near Franeker has been evacuated. A high-voltage pylon was damaged by the collision with the high-voltage cables. There was a risk that the mast will fall, damaging other masts in the area. A section of the ring road in Franeker was closed off, including a gas station and car wash. Furthermore, train service between Franeker and Harlingen will be suspended, as the railway line runs along this closed section of the ring road. All access roads and cycle paths to the evacuated area were closed over a total length of 1.3 kilometers, The work to stabilize the damaged high-voltage pylon was taking longer. Therefore, the evacuated area could not be released by the end of the morning of Aug 26. The crane that was supposed to stabilize the high-voltage pylon has to cross a dike that is not suitable for this heavy transport and therefore had to be transported in two parts. After the arrival, the crane had to be reassembled, before the work could begin. The Municipality of Waadhoeke has opened a phone number for residents and business owners with questions about the situation: 0517 - 380 380.
