Demolition of cement carrier approved
The port captain of Genoa has approved the recycling plan for the 'Mar Grande'. The demolition will be carried out in Genoa at the San Giorgio del Porto shipyard. The ship is already moored in the port of Genoa and will be scrapped in about 90 days. It is the first case of ship demolition in Italy initiated pursuant to EU Regulation 1257/2013 and the current guidelines of the International Maritime Organization. The operations include a first lightening phase with the ship still floating, followed by a second phase in the dock during which all the liquids still present on board are removed such as residual oils, bilge water, etc.. Then the steel will be cut down. All hazardous materials on board - including asbestos - have been rigorously inventoried and the ship recycling plan approved by the Maritime Authority has certified compliance with current regulations on waste management and the prevention of environmental damages. All waste, produced by the demolition of the vessel, will therefore be characterized and subject to precise tracking to the plants outside the port. The approval process saw the involvement of the Metropolitan City of Genoa, which at the time issued to the "San Giorgio del Porto" shipyard the integrated environmental authorization for the ship demolition.
