Ferry back in service after repairs
The 'Manxhman' has been brought back into service, putting daytime sailings to Lancashire back on schedule, following severe delays to crossings between Douglas and Heysham on Wednesday as damage to firefighting equipment onboard the back-up vessel 'Ben-My-Chree' was fixed. The ferry had been brought into action after a technical issue caused smoke in an engine room on the 'Manxman', temporarily triggering an emergency response onboard and putting it out of service. The ferry successfully completed sea trials in Douglas Bay on the evening of Aug 20 following repairs. The 'Ben-My-Chree's final back-up passenger journey from Lancashire arrived back in Douglas at 12:45 BST. The vessel has now been scheduled to resume freight-only sailings for the remainder of the Manx Grand Prix and Classic TT period.
Some passengers injured during heavy rolling
A small number of passengers were hurt when the 'Manxman'aborted its entry into Heysham Port on Aug 11. The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company said some people suffered minor injuries when the Manxman rolled while turning sharply to starboard, resulting in the vessel heeling to port side. No emergency response was needed. The action was taken by the master during the 08:00 a.m. BST crossing of the vessel as it was out of optimum approach position, when preparing to enter the Lancashire port. The fery company would cooperate fully with any investigation deemed necessary. The rest of the day's sailings continued as planned.
Smoke detected in engine room
Sailings of the ' Manxman' between the Isle of Man and Lancashire have been cancelled on Aug 19, after smoke was detected in the ferry's machinery room prompting an emergency response on board. Standard safety procedures had been activated during the 02:15 a.m. BST crossing from Heysham to Douglas, including assembling passengers at emergency stations. No passengers or crew were injured and there was no threat to the overall safety of the vessel. The ferry's 08:30 a.m. crossing to the Lancashire port and its afternoon return have been cancelled while the issue wss investigated.
