Philippine supply ship damaged in confrontation near Scarborough Shoal

Wed Sep 17 10:48:44 CEST 2025 Timsen

The Philippines’ monthly supply mission to the disputed area in the South China Sea near the Scarborough Shoal resulted in he use of water cannons against the BRP 'Datu Gumbai Piang', which in turn hit one of the Chinese Coast Guard vessels, on Sep 16, 2025. The Philippines Coast Guard and the Department of Agriculture - Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources regular resupply more than 35 Filipino fishing vesseks operating in the area around the shoal. At least three Coast Guard vessels, two vessels with the supplies, and the 'Mamalakaya' were on the mission, bringing essential fuel and ice to the fishermen. China conducted a live fire exercise in the region, and shortly after 9 a.m. LT, the vessels began to interact at various positions ranging between 17, 14, and 10 nautical miles from the shoal. A China Coast Guard vessel blasted the 'Datu Gumbay Piang' (IMO: 1104827) with its water cannon for 29 minutes. Another vessel had begun using its water cannon when the Filipino vessel was 17 miles from the shoal. A third vessel later attempted to block the ship when it was ten miles from the shoal. The ship sustained significant damage, including shattered windows on the bridge, damage to the captain’s cabin, and electrical short circuits. The glass from the windows injured one sailor aboard the vessel. The deluge of water caused a short circuit that affected electrical outlets and five outdoor air-conditioning units. After the resulting collisions, the ships disengaged, and the 'Datu Gumbay Piang' rejoined the others and completed the resupply mission.
