Barges in collision, one sank
On Oct 26, 2018, a collision occurred on the Canal du Nord south of Péronne near Eterpigny (Somme) around 7,25 p.m. The "Mac Gyver" (ENI-No.: 06001905), loaded with 700 tons sand, was in a head-on-collision with the "Hijete‘ (ENI-No.: 01830373) along with the barge "Yamoto" from St. Mammes, carrying 500 tons barley, in a bend of the waterway. Attempts of the "Mac Gyver" to contact the other barge via VHF or light signals failed, and both ships clashed with a speed of 7-8 knots each. The "Hijete" was breached and started to sink with the bow. The fire brigade was alerted and tried to dewater the ship with three pumps. They found a breach of 30x10 centimeters in the foreship. Around 11 p.m. the bow was resting on the bottom in a water depth of 3,5 meters. As the cargo holds continued to flood, the pumps were deactivated. At 1.15 a.m. on Oct 27 also the engine room started flooding. The anti pollution force from Poulainville laid out 80 meters oil booms. At 2.40 a.m. the fire brigade could leave the place. In the morning only the wheelhouse emerged partially above the water. The police from Noyon started an investigation and found two more leaks which explained the severe flooding. A small oil spill was visible around the wreck. The salvage will take several days. The water level of the canal between Épénancourt and Péronne was to be lowered half a meter on a length of 9.5 kilometers to get the upper part of the cargo holds above the water and be able to patch it and pump the water out. The "Mac Gyver" suffered less damage. Ship traffic was blocked between Péronne and Epenancourt for the time being.
