Ferry disabled by broken towing wire
On Aug 10, 2025, at around 8:30 p.m., WITA, a pilot boarded the 'Sabuk Nusantara 89' to guide the vessel into the Samarinda shipping channel at buoy 3. At9 p.m.,the vessel planned to pass the tugs 'Biak 10' and 'SCP 01', which were towing the barge 'Layar Jaya 07'. However, weather conditions deteriorated with strong winds reaching approximately 25 knots accompanied by strong currents, making maneuvering difficult. At about9,30 p.m. while the passing the 'SCP 01' and the 'Layar Jaya 07', the 'Sabuk Nusantara' made contact with the barge due to the combination of strong winds and currents that made the vessel difficult to control. The barge’s towing line struck the propeller of the ferry, causing a total engine failure. Losing propulsion, the vessel was unable to maintain position and again was in collision with the 'Layar Jaya 07', resulting in a dent of approximately 20 centimetres length above the waterline. The tugs continued the voyage after replacing the towing line. At 10 p.m., the. 'Sabuk Nusantara 89' dropped anchor in a safe location to ensure smooth navigation in the channel, while awaiting the evacuation of the passengers on the morning of Aug 11 in safe condition. The KN 'Miang Besar' was deployed to evacuate the passengers and transfer them to the the patrol boat 'KNP 373'. Communication was made with the 'Sabuk Nusantara 89', regarding towing preparations by the tug 'Sapaku' to move the vessel to the front of the Muara Pegah pilot station for repairs.
