Russian tanker to be removed from Polish port
The "Khatanga" has to be removed from the port of Gdynia. The tanker has been moored there since 2017 and has already broken loose from its mooring twice, endangering the safety of other ships. The Ministry of Infrastructure announced on Feb 6 that the Russian ship will permanently leave the port of Gdynia. The decision was issued by the Director of the Maritime Office in Gdynia. The statement said that the port authority should remove the ship immediately, but no later than three months from the date of the decision. In addition, the agency is demanding compensation from the Russian shipping company for the entire period the ship has been moored in the port. The owner of the ship, the Murmansk Shipping Company, filed for bankruptcy in 2020, which is why it was no longer interested in the fate of the "Khatanga". The shipping authority had previously had concerns about the ship's safety. The ship could pose a chemical and intelligence threat, among other things.
Tanker broke lose from moorings
The 'Khatanga', which has been docked and deteriorating in Gdynia for over six years after failing a Port State inspection, broke lose on Jan 12, 2025. The inspection had uncovered serious structural issues and crew competency concerns, forcing the vessel into indefinite limbo. Abandoned by its owners, the Murmansk Shipping Company, after their 2020 bankruptcy, the tanker has been left to rot without so much as a skeleton crew to keep it afloat. The situation came to a head during recent winter storms when the tanker broke loose from its moorings twice, on Dec 15, 2024, and then on Jan12 – prompting frantic efforts to secure it. The Seaport Authority has been fighting a legal battle to seize the ship, citing years of unpaid port fees racked up by its absentee owners. Adding the Murmansk Shipping Company to international sanctions lists is one potential move, which would allow Polish authorities to take control of the vessel. Brokers have even listed the 'Khatanga' for sale.
