Wreck of tour boat unloaded in Abashiri

Wed Jun 01 10:53:53 CEST 2022 Timsen

On June 1, the 'Kazu I' was lifted from the 'Kaishin' at Abashiri Port and transported for further investigation into the accident that killed 14 and left another 12 missing. The wreck was loaded on a large truck and taken to a facility several hundred meters away, covered with a blue tarpaulin. Later in the day, families of those killed or lost in the accident off Japan's northernmost main island will be given the chance to see the vessel and place flowers for their loved ones. The Japan Coast Guard will now examine the boat's underside in hopes of making progress in determining the cause of the accident. The Coast Guard, Maritime Self-Defense Force, Hokkaido prefectural police, local fishermen and other tourist boat operators conducted a sweep for three days through May 31, but the search ended without finding any trace of the 12 missing people, including two crew of the vessel. The Transport Ministry said on May 24 it intends to revoke in June the boat operator's license, after confirming violations of 17 safety regulations. It would be the most severe administrative penalty ever imposed under the maritime transportation law. Salvaged tour boat searched

Sun May 29 19:34:27 CEST 2022 Timsen

Coast guard and other authorities on May 28 searched the inside of the salvaged tour boat 'Kazu I'. They wre looking for any clues to discovering traces of the missing. So far, 14 of the 26 people have been found dead. The wreck, placed on the 'Kaishin', arrived at the port of Abashiri in the afternoon of May 27. Work to drain water from the boat commenced at the port, in order to move it onto land. The 1st Regional Coast Guard Headquarters, based in the Hokkaido city of Otaru, and others are continuing the search for the missing while expanding the search area to include waters around Kunashiri, one of the four Russian-held islands claimed by Japan.

Wreck of tour boat arrived in port

Fri May 27 12:02:52 CEST 2022 Timsen

The 'Kaishin' with the wreck of the tourist boat 'Kazu I' that sank off Hokkaido last month arrived at the port of Abashiri on May 27, setting the stage for a full-fledged investigation into the cause of the accident that left 14 people dead and 12 missing. The 19-ton Kazu I, being transported on a barge, will be brought ashore as early as May 29 after being drained from water. The wreck was covered with a blue tarpaulin off the Hokkaido town of Shari, while being transported to the port of Abashiri. Nippon Salvage Co. placed the boat on the deck of the barge at around 3:20 a.m. after it was raised by crane from a depth of 182 meters, having failed to tow the vessel closer to the port earlier this week. The Coast Guard is continuing to search for the 12 people unaccounted for using ships and planes. It has been revealed that the boat operator did not take adequate safety measures, such as its president not fulfilling an obligation to stay in the office while a tour was under way.
