USCG monitoring Chinese research vessels

Thu Sep 04 10:54:33 CEST 2025 Timsen

The U.S. Coast Guard has responded to the two Chinese research vessels 'Jidi' and 'Zhong Shan Da Xue Ji Di', which were operating in waters off Alaska’s northern coast between Aug 31 and Sep 2,. The Coast Guard Arctic District deployed the USCGC 'Healy (WAGB-20)' to monitor and query the vessel. The 'Jidi' was sailing approximately 265 nautical miles northwest of Utqiagvik, and the 'Zhong Shan Da Xue Ji Di' was located about 230 nautical miles north of Utqiagvik. Both vessels were operating over the U.S. Extended Continental Shelf and were part of a group of five Chinese vessels recently active in Arctic waters. Prior to responding to the Chinese vessels, the Coast Guard Cutters 'Waesche (WMSL 751)' and 'Healy' had conducted a joint patrol in the Arctic Ocean, part of the service’s commitment to maintaining a presence in the region. An HC-130J Hercules fixed wing aircraft from Air Station Kodiak was also deployed on Aug 31 to provide aerial support.
