Bridge remained closed for car traffic after allision

Fri Jun 06 10:41:11 CEST 2025 Timsen

After the allision of the 'IJsseldelta' with the bridge over the Dortmund-Ems Canal at the EmslandArena , the bridge has been closed since then. Current recommendations for a detour directed car traffic south of the accident site past the EmslandArena, The alternative route was via the bypass, i.e., the B70 and B213. According to current information, the Waterways and Shipping Authority (Wissenschaftsamt) indicated that the bridge was not in danger of collapsing. However, the extent to which repairs or replacement measures were necessary and possible, and how long the bridge will have to remain closed to traffic, were still unclear. In the afternoon, WSA employees inspected the bridge using a cherry picker. To better assess the extent of the repairs, they brought in a structural engineer. It was dound out that the crossbeam was more severely affected than I initially thought, being not only bent, but also warped. Repairing it will be quite difficult. The initial inspection on May 4 had revealed that a longitudinal girder of the bridge had been damaged. This now needs to be replaced. However, exactly how this will be done is still unclear. A temporary structure could be built or a section of the girder burnt out and replaced. The bridge will remain closed to traffic until further notice. The repairs could take several months. Whether the bridge can be reopened, at least for pedestrians and cyclists, depends on the specific renovation plans. The canal was reopened to shipping on the evening of June 4. The 'IJsseldelta' remained stationary in Holthausen as of June 6. Allision in Lingen

Thu Jun 05 09:11:48 CEST 2025 Timsen

On Jue 4, 2025, at 12:42 p.m., the 'Ijsseldelta', eroute towards Meppen, allided with a bridge over the Dortmund-Ems Canal in Lingen. The stilt at the starboard side foreship should have been retracted at the bridge. However, for unexplained reasons this did not happen. The following allision caused a main girder to collapse and crack. The police initially feared a possible risk of collapse on the bridge Car and ship traffic in the area of the bridge was halted. On the evening, ships were sailing again on the Dortmund-Ems Canal. The bridge will remain closed to road traffic until at least Juen 5. A simple repair was not possible. A final assessment, however, will only be made in the next few days. The accident, in which no one was injured, caused property damage amounting to millions of euros. The vessel was first thoroughly examined by the waterway police at the New Harbour in Lingen and was then able to continue its journey to the refinery harbour in Lingen-Holthausen, where it moored. The bridge crosses the Dortmund-Ems Canal in the immediate vicinity of the Emsland Arena. It has no supporting pillars. Footpaths on the right and left banks lead under the bridge. A detour past the Emsland Arena has been set up for motorists and pedestrians.
