Executive officer relieved from command after fire

Fri Jun 27 10:52:02 CEST 2014 Timsen

An investigation into the fire aboard the USS "Hue City" on Apr 14 fire ended with the ship's executive officer being relieved of his duties on June 26. Rear Adm. Vic Mercado, commander of Carrier Strike Group 8, found that Lt. Cmdr. John Liddle failed to comply with procedures that could have prevented the fire. The fire occurred while the ship, which is based out of Naval Station Mayport, was on scheduled deployment, crossing the Atlantic Ocean. The ship was about 200 nautical miles northeast of Bermuda when the fire broke out. Flammable material had been stored in an exhaust uptake trunk. The fire was extinguished without significant injuries, but caused enough damage to force to the guided missile cruiser to turn back one week into its deployment.

Wed Apr 16 18:26:47 CEST 2014 Timsen

The USS "Hue City (CG 66)" was forced to return to her homeport of Mayport, following a fire that occurred on Apr 14, 2014. There were no injuries to the crew, and the ship continued to operate under her own power. The "Hue City" was transiting toward Mayport in company with USS "Gettysburg (CG 64)". Both ships were scheduled to return to port in the morning of Apr 18. The extent of the damage was being assessed, and the cause of the fire was under investigation.

US destroyer Hue City rescues Iranian sailors

Sun Aug 19 07:36:15 CEST 2012 arnekiel

They were found adrift in the Arabian Sea after pirates captured them and stripped their dhow of supplies. Hungry and without fuel to reach port, the sailors of the Iranian-flagged M/V Payam radioed desperately for help. The SOS was picked by an Orion PC-3 aircraft of the US Navy which alerted the USS Hue City, a destroyer of the 5th Fleet which rushed on August 17, 2012 to assist the troubled vessel. On board were seven Iranian and six Pakistani mariners. The Hue City’s Commanding Officer Captain Daniel Uhls ordered that two inflatable boats with the hospital corpsman and a rescue team be sent to the distressed vessel to provide aid. Two of the dhow’s sailors were in need of medical assistance which was provided by the navy team. http://www.khaleejtimes.com/nation/inside.asp?xfile=/data/nationgeneral/2012/August/nationgeneral_August311.xml§ion=nationgeneral
