Tug involved in salvage of sunken Nancy Glen in Loch Fyne

Thu Apr 12 19:17:11 CEST 2018 Timsen

A fortnight after the "Handfast" and a crane barge were positioned above the wreck of the prawn trawler "Nancy Glen" hich foundered on January 18, 2018, with the loss of two Tarbert men, the ship was raised by the crane on the recovery barge in the early hours of Apr 12. Short time laters salvors found human remains inside. Skipper Duncan MacDougall and crewman Przemek Krawczyk were believed to have gone down with the vessel and having been trapped inside. The Scottish government pledged to cover the cost of trying to locate and recover the men. The trawler was lying 140 meters deep in Loch Fyne, below diving depth, between Barmore Island and Rubha Preasach. The operation was to raise the wreck to a depth where divers could search for the missing men. The research vessel "Severn Sea" has been clearing away debris using remotely operated underwater vehicles. The fishery protection vessel "Mina" was patrolling the waters around the site since Apr 10 as the police underwater unit launched an RIB into Tarbert Bay from the CalMac ferry terminal. While the vessel has now been lifted clear of the water, it remains unsafe for specialist officers from Police Scotland and the Scottish Fatalities Investigation Unit to enter the boat and complete the recovery and identification process. This process will not be completed until it has been deemed safe to do so and the specialist teams will remain on standby. The families were being kept up to date with the progress being made. It was anticipated that the teams will be able to continue their work on Apr 13. Campaigners have so far raised more than £280,000 for the men’s wives and children.
