Landing craft dismantled in environmental friendly way with water jets

The 'H.C Hagemann' is being recycled in the frame of a pilot project in Kiel in which a ship can be dismantled in an environmentally friendly manner by the Cuxhaven based company Leviathan at the German Naval Yard. Leviathan advances in Kiel by remote control, working with a water jet with 2500 bar pressure to cut through the steel plates of the hull. Reinforced steel pipes, engine parts and armored rubbing strips on the hull of the "H.C. Hagemann 1" are also cleanly cut. The water used during the cutting process is collected. The ship's berth is fully secured. Nothing gets into the harbour water or into the ground. The demand for an ecologically responsible solution for recycling old ships is increasing as is the pressure on the shipping companies. The test object is an old landing craft that was used between the mainland and Heligoland in the recent years. The ship was built in 1955 as the French landing craft "Ardeche" for the French Army and sailed on the Rhine. Demolition of work boat pioneering work in green ship recycling in Germany

The Leviathan GmbH has taken delivery of the 'H.C. Hagemann', its first ship for decommissioning and recycling. The construction vessel has been lifted out of the water and placed on its decommissioning pad in the drydock of the TKMS yard in Kiel for a safe and environmentally sound recycling onshore. The company will cut the vessel with a cold cutting technology in the coming weeks almost emissions free and with the friendly and valuable support of German Naval Yards, owner of the waterfront land in Kiel. “The process for green ship recycling developed by Leviathan satisfies the [vessel] owner’s wish to be a pioneer in green ship recycling in Germany and that the ship will find its way as valuable resource in a circular economy,” states Leviathan.
