Oil salvaged from grounded ship

Wed Feb 29 18:43:20 CET 2012 Timsen

Thousands of gallons of fuel and lube oil were salvaged from the "Miss Pearl" since the ship grounded. The United State Coast Guard has been working to pump the nearly 3,000 gallons of fuel and 275 gallons of lube oil from the ship and into storage tanks on scene. Pumping efforts were completed on Feb 28. Despite less than helpful weather conditions, that safety was the top concern during this incident for the Marine Safety Unit in Port Arthur. Now that the liquids have been taken care of, they can shift focus to lifting the vessel off the rocks and securing it for removal and salvage. A safety zone of about 1,000 yards has been set up and is being monitored so the Coast Guard can alert transiting vessels to the grounded ship.

Miss Pearl grounded - various injuries

Sat Feb 25 15:53:36 CET 2012 Timsen

The Coast Guard responded to the "Miss Pearl" near the Sabine jetties on Feb 24, 2012. Watchstanders from Sector Houston-Galveston received a call on Channel 16 at 6:17 a.m. reporting that the "Miss Pearl" had run aground on the west side of the Sabine jetties. It was also reported that the four-person crew had suffered various injuries. A 45-foot Response Boat-Medium and crew from Station Sabine and a MH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter from Air Station Houston were dispatched to the scene to assist. The crew of the rescue helicopter hoisted the four crewmembers to safety and transported them to awaiting EMS at the Beaumont Airport. The RBM and the rescue helicopter remained onscene with pollution investigators from Marine Safety Unit Port Arthur to assess the fuel spill that resulted from the grounding. Approximately 4,000 gallons of diesel fuel was spilled and pollution response and salvage efforts were ongoing. The Coast Guard is working with the vessel owner and will supervise and direct cleanup efforts. The goal is to salvage the vessel while mitigating environmental and economic impacts.
