the "Palchem 1", which had been in collision with the Malta-flagged cargo m/v "Medousa", 9674 gt (IMO: 7505190) on Apr 2 at 3.50 a.m. some minutes after having departed from the Kiel-Holtenau locks of the Kiel Canal, continued its voyage with a cargo of 12000 tons gas oil bound for Wilhelmshaven in the afternoon at 5 p.m. After the tug "Holtenau" had disconnected from the "Medousa" at 7.30 p.m., also this ship resumed its voyage around 8 p.m. It had been sailing with 12 km/h due to its draught of 9,1 metres and was passed by the tank m/v with a speed of 15 km/h underneath the Holtenau road bridge. The "Palchem 1" had almost passed the "Medousa" when the bow of the cargo vessel was pulled towards the stern of the tank m/v. The "Palchem 1" was hit at the stern and pushed perpendicular to the traffic lane. Traffic in the Kiel Canal at the collision site had to be blocked until both vessels were berthed at the nearby pilings. Both captains had to pay a safety fine.
