Castaways cared for by Red Cross Iceland after rescue in 12-m-waves
On Aug 9 at 8 a.m. the twelve German survivors rescued by the schooner that sank southwest of Garðsskaga on Aug 8 around 11 p.m. were welcomed by the Red Cross in Efstaleiti. Volunteers and Red Cross workers nursed and supported them. On board the schooner were five adults and seven children, the youngest 11 years old. The Red Cross welcomed the castaways,provided clothing and shelter until the group is leaving Iceland on Aug 11. Red Cross volunteers were working in rotating shifts to nurture and provide psychosocial support for the next two days. The Icelandic Coast Guard had received an emergency call from the Brigantine 17 nautical miles west of the Reykjanes peninsula. There were 12 people onboard, including four crew members and eight young passengers when the yacht started to leak in high winds and waves of up to 12 meters. Due to the difficult weather conditions, it took time for the rescue team to get on board, and it was not until 2 a.m. that the passengers were safe in the rescue boat "Einar Sigurjónsson", just in time before the ship sank on a water depth of 90 meters. The rescue team were surprised how unprepared the passengerw were for the cool North Atlantic weather. The castaways were brought to the town of Sandgerði where they were met by representatives of the German embassy. Falado von Rhodos sank in storm, all saved
In the night of Aug 9, 2013, the "Falado von Rhodos" encountered a storm off Iceland ans suffered water ingress short before midnight. The Coastguard sent boats and a helicopter and saved five adults and five children aged 11-15, a pathfinder group out of Ulm, from the ship. An attempt to take the vessel in tow failed. The 12 castaways were taken to Sandgerðis in Southwest-Iceland where they were cared for by representants of the German embassy and tehe police.
