Spanish Navy intercepted Russian warships

The Spanish Navy intercepted a Russian submarine and a tug as they passed through waters near the Balearic Islands in the western Mediterranean, near the Spanish Exclusive Economic Zone. The 'Rayo' accompanied both ships to a remote position, thus ensuring transit in the region. Since the afternoon of Oct 11, 2023, the 'Rayo (P-42)' and monitoring the two Russian warships. The Russian vessels intercepted corresponded to a Kilo II class submarine and the naval tug 'Sergey Balk' of the Russian Armed Forces. The escort started south of the Balearic Islands and was to continue until the vessels have left Spanish waters. The 'Rayo' wa integrated into the Maritime Operational Command, under operational control of the Operations Command (MOPS) since Oct 1, carrying out a permanent surveillance and deterrence operation in the region.
