Heavy load carrier entered Concarneau to take on board the Calypso

Mon Mar 14 22:08:32 CET 2016 Timsen

On Mar 14 the "Abis Dusavik" entered the port of Concarneau at 8 a.m. to embark the "Calypso", Cousteau's legendary ship which will be restored in Istanbul by the Cousteau Foundation. The captain Patrice Quesnel, captain of the "Alcyone" (another ship of Cousteau) is in charge of the "Calypso" program. He be accompanied by the Italian naval engineer Dr. Marco Cobau, who will oversee the renovation at the Turkish shipyard to get the ship as close as possible to the former research vessel. Thus, the infrastructure, equipment and various items of the board will be kept, except certain navigation equipment which has to be replaced for more modernity and safety on board. The ship will also be equipped with new engines purchased in 2009 which are more efficient and environmentally. Protected by a blue tarp, the former minesweeper will be loaded onto the cargo ship. The "Calypso" will be used for education missions and scientific. The idea of the association is to preserve a part of history and save the iconic vessel but also to make known its history to the younger generation and assign the famous boat the opportunity to continue serving the education of the public about the importance of the protection of ecosystems.
