Georgian survivors return home

Fri Jan 20 11:21:01 CET 2012 Timsen

Georgian sailors who survived the explosion "Edirne" in the Adriatic Sea returned to Georgia from Tirana on Jan 18. Required documents were prepared by the Albanian side and the owner of the vessel. The vessel sank after an explosion in cargo tank on Jan. 15, three miles from Albanian Port of Durres in the Adriatic Sea. The tanker unloaded more than 3,000 tons of fuel in the port and was leaving the port. According to preliminary data, the cause of the explosion was the failure to carry out tank degassing after unloading fuel. The dead body of the captain, an Azerbaijani citizen, has been already identified. The dead body of a Georgian sailor was also identified, but the body of the boatswain hasn't been found yet. The sailors will conduct further medical examination prior to departure for Georgia. Their flight was first to Istanbul and then further in Batumi.

Non-decontaminated tanks caused deadly explosion

Tue Jan 17 11:01:27 CET 2012 Timsen

The body of the Azerbaijani Captain of the "EDirne" who was killed in an explosion, has been identified. His body will be transferred to the Azerbaijani side after obtaining permission from the authorities of Albania. The bodies of two Georgian citizens, among them the boatswain, was also identified. The cause of the explosion was non-decontaminating of the vessel's tanks after unloading the fuel. There were six Georgia crew, four from Azerbaijan, three Turkey and two from Ukraine on board.

Tanker Sinks Three Miles off Durres; at Least 1 Dead

Sun Jan 15 18:12:03 CET 2012 arnekiel

Albania (AP) Albanian police in a coastal town say a tanker has sunk after unloading fuel. One sailor has been found dead and at least two others are missing. It wasn't immediately clear what caused the Sierra Leone-flagged Edirne to sink Sunday about three miles (five kilometers) from a harbor in Durres, a day after unloading more than 3,000 tons of fuel there. Police spokeswoman Ornela Cako says a sailor's body was found and it is believed two others, including the captain, an Azerbaijan national, are missing. Twelve crew members, most of them Georgians, have been rescued. Cako says smoke was spotted before the ship sank. Authorities are continuing a search-and-rescue mission. They gave no details of the ship's capacity and where it was coming from.
