Tanker refloated 23 days after grounding

Sun Jul 02 21:43:52 CEST 2017 Timsen

On July 2 the "Chemroad Journey" was refloated on July 2, under guiidance of the Vietnam Maritime Bureau, Ministry of Transport and the Vietnam SAR Coordination Center, after about 8.000 tons of the cargo, 30.000 tons chemicals, had been siphoned by the tanker "Sun Mercury" (IMO: 9291444) which had been moored alongside the casualty, since July 1. From June 15 to 26 some 826 tons were transferred from the foreship to other tanks to prevent an oil pollution. The tanker was hard aground in pos. 10-02.90N; 108-58.40 E in the Hon Da area in Southeastern Vung Tau about 120 nautical miles off Binh Thuan. The ship had two ballast tanks ruptured and was listing 15,5 degrees to port. At 3.37 p.m. the ship was pulled off by the "CN-09 BP 11.19.01" of the Border Patrol of the Binh Thuan Province, the "CSB 6008" of the Coast Guard, the "SAR 413" of the Joint Search Center Trabajador 1 in the Philippines, the "Minh Hoang 06", "Sea Boxer" and "Sea Tiger" both from Vietnam, and the "Lam Hong" from Panama and pulled to Phu Quy (Binh Thuan). Tanker to be lightered

Mon Jun 19 10:07:15 CEST 2017 Timsen

On June 17 more than 200 tons of fuel were to be pumped into aft tanks in order to lighten and raise the bow of the grounded "Chemroad Journey". About 10,000 tons of cargo, consisting of the chemicals Butyraldehyde, Ethylene Glycol, Ethyl Hexanol and Ethanol Amine, were to be siphoned to a lighter tanker at the grounding site in position 10 02N 108 58E, 28 miles south of Phu Quy island. The tug "Minh Hoang 06" had transferred nine people, including salvage personnel, engineers, representatives of ship owners and shipping agents to the accident site, among them six Japanese, two Koreans and one Vietnamese. The ship was tilting 15.5 degrees to port side and had water ingress in a ballast tank at the bow. The initial inspection showed that one quarter of the bow was stuck on the bottom and the outer hull was torn in some places. Nippon Salvage tasked to refloat tanker

Thu Jun 15 09:38:45 CEST 2017 Timsen

The "Chemroad Journey" remained aground in position 10 02N 108 58E, 28 miles south of Phu Quy island. On June 14 a board of officials and experts, including the SAR agency, local authorities and the Coast Guard, visited the grounding site. There was no leakage of the 29,954 tons cargo nor 144 tons bunker fuel. The crew of 27 remained safe. The tanker was listing 15 degrees to port. Two salvage options were under consideration: tilting the tanker's aft, thus lifting the fore section, which was resting on bottom, and pulling the tanker free by a tug; or lightering the tanker before starting refloating attempts. A salvage tug of Nippon Salvage was due to arrive at the grounding site in the evening.
