Coast Guard cutter in vain tried to keep sinking fishing vessel afloat
On Jan 17, 2025, the 'William Chadwick (WPC-1150)' assisted the fishing vessel 'Miss Sandy' on the Atlantic Ocean, about seven nautical miles off Gloucester, Massachusetts, which had suffered water ingress in the engine room. As the crew was unable to stop the flooding with four to five feet of water in the engine room and exhaust fumes filling the space, adding to the danger, the fishermen issued a distress call. Within 30 minutes, the Coast Guard cutter had reached the 'Miss Sandy', along with crews of the Station Gloucester. Dewatering pumps were placed on board the fishing vessel. and the crew was safely taken off. The 'William Chadwick' attached a towline and proceeded towards Gloucester. However, the flooding increased, and the pumps could not cope with the flooding. The cutter dropped the towline just before the 'Miss Sandy' sank stern first. There were no reports of injuries.
