Celandro refloated and towed to Antwerp

The salvage of the sunken "Celandro" in the Rupel succeeded on Mar 26. It tokk a long time to dewater the hold, and around 10:30 a.m. the flood rose again. An open door between the engine room and the hold had to be closed by a diver, so that no more water could float into the hold through the still submerged stern. On Mar 2 salvors removed 504 tonnes of cement from the capsized vessel and deposited it on the quay. On Mar 26 in the morning continued with two floating cranes. Divers put slings around the wreck and fixed bollards on the fore and aft starboard side. Then the ship was righted after the slings were connected at the shore, but the hull still remained on the bottom of the Rupel. At low tide the main deck and the remains of the wheehlhouse emerged. The rescuers worked hard to refloat the ship before the flood returned. They succeeded, and the "Celandro" was subsequently towed to Antwerp and berthed in Merksem on the Albert Canal. After surveys of the ship a decision was to be taken whether it was worth a repair. Salvage of Celandro carried out by Herbosch-Kiere

In Niel preparations have started for the salvage of the "Celandro". The recovery work will likely continue through to Mar 27. The "Waterwegen en Zeekanaal" appointed the salvage company Herbosch-Kiere which sent a crane ship to the location of the sunken ship on Mar 21. In the morning of Mar 22 it started with the removal of the cargo of cement from the ship which probably will last until Mar 23. The cargo will be taken to an approved landfill. On Mar 24 and 25 the preparations for the removal of the ship itself will take place, and if everything is going according to plan, on Mar 26 the operation will be concluded with an inspection of the entire site to see if any remaining cargo has to be cleared from the Rupel. Cement barge capsized in Niel

On Mar 15, 2013, at 5 a.m. the "Celandro" got in trouble during unloading operations of 500 tons cement at the quay of the concrete Company Coeck on the Rupel in Niel. The ship developed a list and took in water. The fire brigades from Niel and Boom were soon on scene, but on their arrival the barge had already capsized and was lying on ist starboard side at 5.30 a.m. The captain and his wife had saved themselves before. Small amounts of fuel leaked out but were removed by the fire brigades with absorbants. Around midday the tanks were drained. A dredsger removed cargo pallets which had floated out of the cargo hold onto the shore. Ship traffic was not affected, but the salvage may take some days.
