Tugboat crew drifts to shore after boat hits rock

Sat Oct 13 09:20:24 CEST 2012 arnekiel

The Coast Guard says two crew members from a 70-foot tugboat climbed into their survival suits, got into their life raft and drifted to shore after their vessel ran aground in Alaska's Norton Sound. KTUU-TV reports (http://is.gd/N5gTv9 ) that the tug Captain Hendren hit a rock and began taking on water Friday. Coast Guard Petty Officer David Mosley says the vessel ran aground north of St. Michael. The crew members were picked up by residents of St. Michael to be warmed up. Mosley says pollution investigators will contact the crew to determine how much fuel the tug had onboard and what environmental response might be needed. Disabled tug ecorted to Cordova

Tue Jul 17 13:51:21 CEST 2012 Timsen

The Coast Guard Cutter "Long Island" escorted the "Capt. Hendren" to Cordova safely on July 16, 2012, at about 3:27 p.m. Coast Guard personnel will attend the vessel in Cordova and inspect repairs once they have been completed prior to vessel getting underway again. The Coast Guard was notified at 2:17 p.m. on July 15 that the tug had experienced a steering casualty and was disabled and adrift with four people aboard in 23 to 28 mph winds and 8-foot seas. The Valdez-based "Long Island" was dispatched to respond. The crew of the tug was able to effect minor repairs to their steering system and get back underway under their own power prior to the cutter’s arrival. The Long Island then escorted the vessel to port. They moored overnight in Port Etches to allow the crew to get some rest before travelling the rest of the way to Cordova.
