Freighter Asia Star seems to be ok proceeding as scheduled to Sandakan, Borneo, after experiencing engine trouble and calling Lingayen Bay, Luzon, on July 22-23 2012. Two freighters issued distress signal and are lost at the moment, South China sea

Mon Jul 23 15:11:26 CEST 2012 odinfm

San Fernando CG Station, Luzon, Philippines, received distress signal from freighter Asia Star on July 22 in the evening, reporting engine failure in position 11 nm west of San Fernando City, Luzon, South China sea. Coast Guard tug 271 was dispatched to the distressed vessel, but had to turn back due to bad weather. No news about the m/v Asia Star since then, as of evening July 23 condition and position of the vessel are unknown, no contact with the vessel. There are several Asia Star vessels, most probably the distressed vessel is a Chinese, Panama-flagged general cargo vessel Asia Star, en route from Dalian to Malaysia’s Sandakan, Borneo. Another freighter Ashraf issued distress signal on July 21 in position some 12 nm SW off Botolan, Zambales Province, Luzon, South China sea. The character of distress is unknown, rescue boat was dispatched to the area, but didn’t locate vessel either visually or by radar, radio cotact was lost. All the vessel in the area informed and asked to keep close watch for any signs of the vessel or maybe, disaster. There are several vessels under the name Ashraf, but available information is not sufficient for identification. Maritime Bulletin http://www.odin.tc
