Dismasted logger towed to Hooksiel

Mon Aug 08 10:43:14 CEST 2016 Timsen

In the evening of Aug 5, 2016, the mizzen mast of the "Vegesack" broke in the estuary of the Elbe and Weser near the Northern Grounds. All 12 crew members remained unharmed. Since the mast had collapsed onto the rear and the stearing gear of the sailing vessel, the "Vegesack" was adrift north of buoy A8 in the fairway of the Old Weser. The crew alerted the MRCC in Bremen which dispatched the lifeboat "Vormann Steffens" of the DGzRS station Hooksiel to the ship which was adrift about 20 nautical miles away. Also the patrol boat "Jade" offered assistance and headed towards the "Vegesack", making standby until the lifeboat arrived. Around midnight the "Vormann Steffens" took the sail logger in tow. On scene were WNW winds up to four Beaufort and a swell of five feet. The lifeboat pulled the "Vegesack" towards the Jade. About 4 a.m. the lifeboat "Baltrum" of the DGzRS station Horumersiel took over with its volunteer crew and pulled the ship which was over 40 meters long with the mast hanging over the stern through the narrow port entrance of Hooksiel. The daughter boat "Adele" of the "Vormann Steffens" worked as stern tug. The outgoing tide was pushing against the side of the tow immediately before Hooksiel, and the difficult maneuver succeeded only during the second attempt.

Medevac in stormy weather

Wed Sep 14 09:46:41 CEST 2011 Timsen

In the midday hours of Sep 12, 2011, the lifeboat "Nis Randers" of the DGzRS station Maasholm medevaced a 75 year old passenger from the "Vegesack" who had suffered a broken leg. In Maasholm a doctor was taken aboard the lifeboat which proceeded in blustery seas and wind of 7 bf from SW to the ketch which was positioned off Falshöft. The man was treated in the ship's hospital once aboard the "Nis Randers". Then he was transported to Maasholm where an ambulance was waiting in the fishing harbour for further treatment while the "Vegesack" proceeded to Kappeln.
