Barge grounded in Mannheim - two injuries
Enroute from Ludwigshafen to Heilbronn the "Breitenstein", 1947 ts (EU-No.: 04701410), ran aground on the Neckar in Mannheim on Dec 27, 2016, at 7.30 a.m. at the southern river shore near the Kurpfalz Bridge. A bunker tanker came to assist the ship. After it succeeded in doing so, the wire used to refloat the barge was pulled into the propeller of the "Breitenstein" and got under tension again. The 57 years old helmsman thereby suffered serious injuries and had to be taken to hospital with a rescue helicoter. Also the 70 year old master had to be treated with a suspected heart attack. Both patients were meanwhile stable. On Dec 28 at daybreak the dredger "Niclas" (MMSI: 211589840) started lightering the cargo of the "Breitenstein" to reduce the draught. A diver was called to clear the fouled propeller. The ship resumed its voyage to Heilbronn in the run of the day.
