Cargo ship kept from sinking off Kristiansund

Fri May 25 09:18:40 CEST 2012 Timsen

The "Biostar" suffered severe water ingress in the engine room in the Edøy Fjord north of Kristiansund in the morning of May 25, 2012. The "Biostar" had loaded about 300 tons of food and was heading north from the Skretting Factory in Averøya when it started taking in water. The MRCC was alerted at 6:23 a.m. Three lifeboats, among them the "Oscar Tybring" with one additional bilge pump, and a Seaking rescue helicopter from the Air Station Orland with two dewatering pumps, rushed to the vessel. The "Oscar Tybring IV" was on site half an hour after the mayday call. Three of the five crew members were taken off as a precaution. The two others remained on board to stem the water ingress. The ship was located in the middle of of Trondheimsleia, southwest of Kråksundet, at that time. It had on board 26 cbm fuel oil. The ship was in the middle of the fairway and had not run aground. By 8.30 a.m. the leak was under control, and by 9 a.m. the ship was stabilized, much higher in the water and no longer in danger of sinking. By 10 a.m. the engine room was being pumped out. The evacuated crew now reboarded the ship. By 12.30 a.m. a tug was expected on scene. The "Oscar Tybring IV" remained on site in the meantime. The vessel was to be towed to the Kvernhusvik Yard at Hitra in the afternoon. A leaking valve was thought to have caused the water ingress.
