Medevac from BW Princess off Gibraltar

Fri May 27 10:57:38 CEST 2011 Timsen

The Gibraltar Port Authority co-ordinated the successful rescue of a seriously injured crewman from the vessel "BW Pincess" which was anchored on 2 miles east of Catalan Bay on the east side of Gibraltar. The Port Authority’s Vessel Traffic Service received the call for assistance on VHF radio at 09.38 a.m. on May 25, 2011, stating one of their crewmen had fallen 5 metres onto the deck of the ship and required urgent medical attention. The VTS immediately contacted the GHA Ambulance Service requesting medical staff to attend at the Port and be transported out to the vessel for assessment of the crewman. On their arrival the paramedics were quickly taken out to the anchorage by the GPA Port Launch accompanied by a VTS Officer. At 1012 hours the Port Launch arrived alongside the vessel and the medics went onboard to assess the crewman’s injuries. The crewman was stabilised and then transferred by stretcher onto the Port Launch by the ship’s crane, arriving back alongside at the Port by 11.04 a.m. where he was then transferred to a waiting ambulance and taken to hospital where he is being treated for head injuries.
