Ship became wedged on river banks on the Main

Tue Feb 04 09:22:32 CET 2025 Timsen

The 'Atoll', en route from Duisburg to Ghent, ran aground on the Main in pos. 49° 57' N 009° 46' E on Jan 31, 2025, at 3 p.m. and became wedged between the two banks at the port of the Karlstadt Schwenk cement works. Probably the helmsman had underestimated the current on the river. The ship was refloated on Feb 1 at around 9 a.m. UTC with the help of the icebreaking tugs 'Grassmann' (MMSI: 211661130) and 'Angermünde' (MMSI 211660870) and moved into the port basin of the Laudenbach industrial area. Ship continued voyage after investigations showed no propulsion damage

Mon Feb 03 11:45:51 CET 2025 Timsen

On Feb 1, at 10.40 a.m. the 'Atoll', which had been en route to Ghent to deilver its cargo of 1,750 tons of clinker, was allowed to leave the port of the cement works in Karlstadt.. After the ship had been pulled back into the basin, an initial inspection there had showed that the rudder and propeller were still functional, and the ship proceeded downstream the Main toward the Harrbach lock, assisted out of the basin by an icebreaker. In Harrbach, the ship was moored again below the lock in pos. 50° 00' N 009° 43' E on Feb 2 at noon, where it remained stationary as of Feb 3. Divers first had to examine whether any damage was caused by the accident, ahead of which the vessel had left the cement works backwards and then drifted sideways. The English-speaking captain was in Karlstadt for the first time and had apparently underestimated the current. After an inspection of the fairway for damage using soundings, shipping on the section of the Main was able to resume. An insurance company will cover the costs of the operation.

Kevin grounded on the Danube

Tue Aug 09 12:11:46 CEST 2016 Timsen

On Aug 2, 2016, at 08:15 a.m. the "Kevin", 1526 ts (EU-No.: 04020060), which was sailing downstream on the Danube from Straubing towards Deggendorf with a cargo of 1758 tons construction steel wires suffered rudder failure. The crew managed to drop the stern anchor, but the ship got stuck with the starboard side aft on the right river shore. Ship traffic was hampered, but vessels could pass with slow speed. The Austrian salvage ship "Horst Felix" managed to pull the barge off on Aug 3. During the refloating attempt the river was closed for ship traffic in the curve near Pfelling for two hours. The "Kevin" was able to resume the voyage to its destination Enns then and arrived in the Austrian port on Aug 4.
