18 year old sailor hero in rescue operation

The 'Ardóran' assisted in the rescue of five crew members of the grounded 'Divina del Mar' on Nov 12. The ship was mackerel fishing with a crew of 10 on board. At 4 a.m. the ship approached Portosín, the base port, when an emergency call was received from the Fisterra Rescue Coordination Center. The 'Divina del Mar', commanded by the brother of a crew member of the 'Ardóran', Eduardo Carreño's brother, Iván Carreño, had run aground in the vicinity of Castro de Baroña. Other fishing vessels in the area were also alert and illuminated the night with their lights. When the 'Ard´ran' arrived in Porto do Son, already at the height of Castro Baroña, they could see the grounded 'Divina del Mar'. Voices were heard inside the ship and the 18 year old Juan Perol along with his companion Ismael embarked on the auxiliary boat and headed to the casualty. The crew of the purse seiner was very nervous. Juan and Ismael nade 2 trips. First they took over three fishermen and on the next trip another two. All at once the rescue work became impossible with an increasing swell. The skipper was the last to leave the ship that was about to capsize. One person, a sailor named José Manuel that Juan knew about the daily task, was missing. He wanted to return, but the weather deteriorated too fast. Three other fishermen had reached the shore by their own means and with the life vests on, but José Manuel had jumped into the sea after the ship tilted and died when his body was struck against the rocks.
