The U.S. Coast Guard has ended its search for the crewman aboard a Canadian freighter who was reported missing as the vessel made its way across Lake Ontario. The man from Nova Scotia was last been seen on Oct 20 around 4 a.m. when the ship was 11 miles north of Rochester. When he was reported missing, the ship was near Alexandria Bay on the St. Lawrence River. Coast Guard rescue crews on boats from Oswego, Rochester and Alexandria Bay, and in aircraft, were involved in the search. The Canadian Coast Guard also sent out search aircraft and rescue boats.

The crew of the "Canadian Provider" contacted the Coast Guard on Oct 20, 2010, at about 1:30 p.m. and reported a Nova Scotian crewmember missing. Coast Guard rescue crews aboard 47-foot Motor Life Boats from Stations Oswego, N.Y., and Rochester, N.Y., a 25-foot Response Boat-Small from Station Alexandria Bay, N.Y., an HH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter from Air Station Detroit, and an HU-25 Guardian fixed-wing aircraft from Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., started searching for the man. Also aiding in the search were Canadian coast guard crews aboard a C-130 long-range surveillance plane and a rescue helicopter from Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Trenton, Ontario, and four search and rescue vessels.
